Srinivasan Suresh joined UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in September 2014.
As the Chief Medical Information Officer, Dr. Suresh is responsible for and provides leadership in the planning, development and implementation of strategic and tactical clinical information systems. In July 2015, he also assumed the role of the Chief Information Officer of UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He oversees the hospital’s electronic health record, data warehouse and advanced analytics initiatives. He continues to practice as a pediatric emergency medicine specialist.
Dr. Suresh is a Visiting Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and also serves as adjunct faculty in the Department of Biomedical Informatics. Board certified in pediatric emergency medicine and in clinical informatics, he has twenty years of experience as a pediatric emergency physician, and eight years as an IT executive. He has had senior leadership roles in two large children’s hospitals in the areas of clinical care, information science, medical education, business development and corporate strategy. As an IT physician champion, he is passionate in the application of business intelligence tools and advanced data analytics in improving quality outcomes in child health, and in enhancing patient and provider satisfaction. He has presented on these topics at national and international conferences, and authored papers on big data and predictive analytics. He is also focused on creating more robust clinical decision support tools in the electronic health record.
In 2015, he was invited to give a TEDx talk on “Applying big data to little patients”. He was instrumental in UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh winning the HIMSS Davies award (2015), and in maintaining Stage 7 HIMSS designation for Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (2016). In 2017, he was named by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of “50 hospital and health system CMIOs to know”. In July 2017, he was appointed as the Director of the new Division of Health Informatics in the Department of Pediatrics at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh/University of Pittsburgh. The mission of this division is to drive the delivery of pediatric healthcare into a new era of high value care and data driven outcomes through transformative innovation and new partnerships. He is a member of the Section of Emergency Medicine and serves on the executive committee on the Council on Clinical Information and Technology of the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a member of the board of directors of the International Society for Pediatric Innovation. He is a past chair of the medical informatics special interest group of the Academic Pediatric Association.
Dr. Suresh received his medical degree from the University of Madras, India. He completed his pediatric residency and pediatric emergency medicine fellowship training at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Detroit, and earned an MBA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
